Buffalo Trace Single Oak Rye Bourbon revives the winning profile from one of the distillery’s most ambitious experiments.
The original Buffalo Trace Single Oak Project, launched in 2011, explored 192 individually numbered barrels, each produced using different combinations of mash bill, entry proof, stave seasoning, grain type, char level, tree section and warehouse style. Some barrels used Buffalo Trace’s wheated bourbon recipe, while others used its rye-based bourbon recipe.
This 2026 release recreates the specifications of Barrel #80, the highest-rated whiskey from the original project. It is not an original Barrel #80 bottling, but a newly produced bourbon made to replicate the winning profile.
Aged for eight years and bottled at 90 proof in a 375 ml format, Buffalo Trace Single Oak Rye Bourbon offers drinkers the opportunity to experience the celebrated Barrel #80 style without opening one of the highly collectible original experimental bottles.
Please note: Original Single Oak Project bottles are individually numbered releases from the original 192-barrel trial. This bottle is the newer commercial release inspired by the winning Barrel #80.
What has emerged is a range of bourbons, each with a unique flavor. Buffalo Trace encourages drinkers to rate each bottle they taste and give feedback, allowing for an outright winner.
If you love bourbon and are fascinated with its process, this is a project you must get involved with. (And you'll have a beautiful bourbon to taste for your trouble!)
